WOMEN’S HOOPS

8/4/09  Anyone else trying to figure out what goes through Athletic Director’s minds before they actually make a hire…e.g. Michael Cooper at USC. Sure he has done a great job on the pro level but was there really no other just as qualified coach that could have been hired that could actually show up for the job sooner then 6 months after being hired?  Or the U of  H has an impressive new hire Takahara-Dias…great background as she worked for the City and County of Honolulu as the Director of Customer Services.  What?  Again, was there no hire available that say had dedicated their life to coaching college basketball, sacrificing relationships, time, weekends etc in the persuit of their dream.  Where all Directors of Customer Service across the country encouraged to apply when the advertisement said a minimum of 5 years head college coaching experience required? Was the advertisement rewritten just for Takahara-Dias since she had absolutely no college coaching experience?  Well done Athletic Directors in making a great statement that you don’t give a crap about women’s basketball.

2/26 QUEENS COLLEGE clinched the regular season ECC title with a win over Molloy College on Wednesday to complete the season sweep and win 19 or their last 20 games.  Somehow though Queens hasn’t cracked the Top 10 in the region but Molloy and Dowling are numbers 6 and 8.  GO FIGURE!

1/25 Queens College took on Molloy University in a battle for first place.  Queens came out on top and stretched their win streak to 12!!  Way to go DAD!!

1/18 UMBC women have pulled to an even 2-2 in the America East, without a single senior on the team and a totally revamped offense that has gone from the Princeton offense the last 5 years, to a run, run, run style look for them to hit their stride once they get into the second half of America East play!

1/14 Going to be a great weekend for women’s hoops; Sunday, No. 9 California hosts No. 7 . … UNC vs t No. 12 Virginia. The No. 2 Tar Heels face four ranked teams in 10 days, including No. 1 Connecticut on Monday. …

Watched U of Hawaii vs San Jose Spartans, should have stayed home.

USC vs UCLA-great game, can’t wait to watch when UCLA has to go cross town to USC

Don’t forget to check out the Stanford-Tenn game this Sunday!

CSU-Monterey Bay is out of the gate with a record start of 6-2 and upset top ranked CCAA opponent CSU-Chico.  Pay attention if you are in the CCAA, the Otters are a new team!

Anyone paying attention to the UMBC Retrievers in Baltimore?  They are off to a 7-2 start, with a 5 game win streak on the line as they take on James Madison Thursday night!

Can Joe McKeown work his magic at Northwestern, like he did at GW?  If he can’t get it done than there probably isn’t much chance of Northwestern ever having women’s basketball success.

Sometimes enough is enough…LOS ANGELES — Highly regarded Southern California guard Jacki Gemelos has suffered another season-ending knee injury, depriving one of the country’s top recruits coming out of high school of a third straight season with the Trojans.  Gemelos injured her left knee during a workout Monday, suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus tear. Previously, she tore the ACL in her right knee twice.

One more day until college hoops practice starts!!

Looks like it will be a San Antonio vs Detroit WNBA Finals.  Darn the NY Liberty!

San Antonio in first WNBA FINALS!  Opponent will be decided Monday!   Hammon scored 35 points, making four free throws in the final 36 seconds, and the Silver Stars advanced to their first WNBA finals with a 76-72 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday.

NY Liberty up 1-0 on Detroit Shock.  Game 2 in progress as of 12:20 Pacific Time.  Det 14-NY 13 2nd quarter 9:21 to go.  What a great pickup Leilani Mitchell has been at backup PG for NY.

Janice Quinn, who led NYU to one women’s Division III title and two other Final Four appearances in 21 seasons, retired Thursday because of medical issues, the school announced.Quinn, who will remain an associate director of athletics, has had an arrhythmia-related condition for several years, had a pacemaker implanted four weeks ago. She compiled a 453-127 record and the Violets won the national championship in 1997 and reached the Final Four in 1996 and 2007. NYU went to the NCAA tournament 13 times under Quinn and it won the University Athletic Association championship six times.

Preseason has kicked off across the country and it should be another exciting year for women’s college basketball.  Stay tuned for updates and predictions!

WNBA has moved onto their conference finals with LA-San Antonio and NY-Detroit matching up.  How interesting would a San Antonio-NY Finals Matchup be, with Becky and VJ matching up with their former team?
